Imagine the possibilities – look at this Solar Stirling Engine !

Although this video is just one among dozens of home made sterling engines, it must be noted that it is also the cheapest ‘working’ engine you might ever come across.Larger more complex sterling engines obviously cost a lot and are yet to join the mainstream.

While some estimates put the conversion efficiency of ‘Solar input to Mechanical output’ to be between 8-10 %, great deal of emphasis is being given on designing more efficient conversion mechanisms. It would be reasonable to assume that Sterling power engines could potentially satisfy mechanical power requirements for applications like water pumping, Air compression etc in areas where generators are the only other option available.

All Charged – but Nowhere to go ? – Part 1

Posted by: greenletters In: TinyGreenDevices

We recently heard the buzz here that consumer battery superweight Energizer would be launching a portable Solar Powered AA and AAA battery charger at the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Fair(CES) this January.

At first look there is little doubt that the device is neatly designed, compact and provides for easy rotation of the solar panel towards source of direct or reflected sunlight , but a quick estimate of the solar-cell surface area and power production estimate based on prevalilng Solar efficiency and conversion levels brings the enthusiasm crashing to just about knee height. The question that come to mind is – ‘Will this unit deliver?’

It may be a bit too early to get a specific answer about the Energizer’s particular product but not too difficult to see where it could go with all the technology available today. In this multi-part post we examin some Portable Solar Powered Charging devices and try to see how practical they can be in day-to-day use.Read on ..
